Junior Kernel Developer

We’re looking for someone to work alongside and learn from our existing lead kernel programmers on diverse and varied projects focused, on embedded type platforms (both ARM & X86).

There are no hard requirements but a basic proven knowledge of the Linux kernel goes without saying. An ability to understand new things and an ability and desire to learn are essential. Interaction with the kernel community is important and some prior experience of this would be very beneficial.

This position is based in our London office.

OpenEmbedded/Poky Engineer

We’re looking for someone to help support, manage and improve Poky - our Linux platform build tool. Applicants should be prepared to work on every level of a Linux system and have knowledge of how these components fit together, at least at a basic level. Experience of all the components isn’t needed but being able to quickly learn new things is essential, along with strong investigative and troubleshooting ability.

You are likely to be working with many different users so strong interpersonal skills over a variety of media are important too.

This position is based in our London office.

Clutter Application Developer

We’re looking for someone that can build amazing applications with Clutter and related technologies (i.e Cairo, WebKit, GStreamer, DBus, GTK+ etc), pushing the limits of what Clutter can do.

You should be self directed, naturally creative, have good visual design awareness and enjoy solving problems in lateral and original ways.

As part of this role you would be working with UI designers, the Clutter core team and customers as to help build cutting-edge applications across a range of Linux consumer electronic devices.

Applicants should show previous experience of application development with Clutter or related UI technologies (i.e GTK+) preferably in C.

Senior UI/UX Designer

We’re looking for someone who can help us design and build next generation user interfaces for consumer electronic devices.

A design graduate with significant professional experience, you will have a strong portfolio demonstrating your experience designing and defining user interfaces and experiences on a variety of electronic media and devices. In particular demonstrable experience and knowledge of:

  • strong visual design skills
  • creating dynamic, original, and intuitive user interface designs
  • embracing constraints to create innovative solutions
  • practising the principles of user centred design
  • creating information architectures, simple prototypes, and design documentation (design guides, human interface guidelines)
  • working with software developers, and client marketing and engineering teams, to create software and/or hardware products

This is a chance to realise your creations, working with an incredible engineering team with a thorough understanding and appreciation of good UI design.

A background in open source is not critical for this role.

This position is based in our London office.

Junior Designer

We are looking for a junior graphic designer to work across a range of media including print, web and UI.

A solid original style, attention to detail, good communication skills, and adaptability are all a must.

This role would best suit a design graduate looking for an interesting, challenging and rewarding role.

Student Intern

We are seeking a smart, passionate, and skilled programmer with a background and history of open source development for an internship at our Bromley Office in London.

Experience of, and contributions to, any of the projects around X.org, GNOME, or OpenEmbedded is preferred but not absolutely required.

Demonstrated development experience using C/C++ is required and knowledge of any other programming languages, autotools, subversion, or other common open source developer tools would be advantageous.

This position is based in our London office.

Office: Our offices are based in Homesdale Business Center in Bromley, a short walk from either Bromley South or Bickley stations, quickly reachable from the center of London.

The office is open and light with all Herman Miller furniture, a lounging area on the mezzanine floor with a number of gaming consoles, a meeting area and a networked stereo. The fridge is always stocked and the coffee machine works very hard.

Flexible working: While we all work hard we’re not fanatical about clock watching - we try be flexible so that if you need to stay home for a delivery or to get something fixed it’s not a problem. Depending on the position and your experience we can arrange for you to work part or full time from home.

Hardware: Everyone gets a high end laptop and whatever else they may reasonably need for their work. Given the nature of what we do, we tend to have lots of interesting hardware to play with.

Travel: With most of our customers based outside of the UK and sponsored visits for employees to conferences around the world, there is a strong possibility of travel with most positions at OpenedHand.

For employees working outside the UK offices, you can expect regular visits to the London office as well as a bi-yearly full company meetup at Christmas and during the summer (usually at GUADEC).

Open Source: Our roots are strongly in open source community involvement and innovation and this ethic and culture is reflected across the company. We contribute to a large number of external open source projects and communities as well as developing our own projects through internal R&D and partnership with customers.

We love to experiment, create new software, and optimise existing components, all so that we can push the limits of what is possible with open source on device based platforms.
